Op 31 december 2008 telde de gemeente 93.601 inwoners en bijna 55.000 arbeidsplaatsen. Leeuwarden is één van de Friese elf steden en voert als gemeenteslogan 'Kijk, dat is het mooie van Leeuwarden!'.
