De geschiedenis in het kort

Parijs is een oude stad die al bestond in de oudheid. Toen woonden op een eiland in de Seine een Gallische stam die door de Romeinen de Parisii werden genoemd; hieraan heeft Parijs haar naam te danken. De Romeinen noemden Parijs toentertijd overigens Lutetia. Lutetia werd een welvarende plaats vanwege haar gunstige ligging aan de Seine, hier was namelijk een goede oversteekplaats. In de loop van de vijfde eeuw werd Parijs door de vanuit het noorden binnenkomende Franken veroverd die het later tot hun hoofdstad maakten. Sindsdien is het altijd de hoofdstad van Frankrijk gebleven en de spil waar dit land om draait.
