De Nokia N97 is het gloednieuwe topmodel binnen de S60 serie van de Finse gsm fabrikant. Het toestel richt zich vooral op consumenten die veel gebruik maken van internettoepassingen: het 3,5 inch touchscreen leent zich uitstekend om websites te bekijken. Naast het touchscreen bevat de N97 ook een uitschuifbaar Qwerty toetsenbord voorzien, wat emailen eenvoudig en aangenaam maakt. Om de internet experience nog verder te verrijken, ontwikkelde Nokia de Ovi suite, waardoor sociale netwerken als Flickr en Facebook toegankelijk worden vanaf het opstartscherm.

Nieuw is ook het concept van de 'social location': de Nokia N97 is uitgerust met een GPS sensor, waardoor de gsm op elk moment exact weet waar je je bevindt. Hierdoor kan je je locatie zichtbaar maken voor familie of vrienden - je bepaalt uiteraard zelf wie jouw locatie kan zien en wie niet. Foto's die je neemt met de Nokia N97 worden ook automatisch voorzien van geo-coördinaten, zodat je achteraf precies kan zien op welke locatie de foto's genomen zijn.

De Nokia N97 ondersteunt tot 48 GB geheugen, met 32 GB ingebouwd geheugen dat is uit te breiden met een 16 GB microSD kaart voor muziek, media en andere data. Dit wordt aangevuld met voortreffelijke muziekfuncties, volledige support voor de Nokia Music Store en continue speelduur tot 1,5 dag. De Nokia N97 bevat ook een 5-megapixel-camera met Carl Zeiss-lens, 16:9 video in DVD-kwaliteit, en ondersteuning voor diensten als Share on Ovi via razendsnelle HSDPA- en WLAN-verbindingen, voor moeiteloze, directe uitwisseling.
