HDTV is de opvolger van de inmiddels ruim 50 jaar oude PAL en NTSC beeldstandaarden. Bij high definition draait alles om de betere beeldkwaliteit met hogere resoluties, hoger contrast, helderdere kleuren en hogere verversingsfrequenties.

Hoewel HDTV's in Japan en de VS al aardig aan het inburgeren zijn, staat deze standaard in Europa nog in de kinderschoenen. Tv-zenders laten voorlopig nog op zich wachten, maar tv-fabrikanten hebben de eerste stap al gezet. "HD-ready" tv's zijn hier inmiddels al volop verkrijgbaar. Het verschil tussen een "HD-ready" tv en volwaardige HDTV is dat een HDTV ook een ingebouwde tuner moet hebben om tv-uitzendingen in high definition te kunnen ontvangen. Een tv moet aan de volgende eisen voldoen om het "HD-ready" logo te mogen dragen.
[*]Het scherm heeft het breedbeeld formaat met een aspectratio van 16:9.
[*]Het scherm heeft minimaal 720 fysieke beeldlijnen.
[*]Het scherm accepteert minimaal de volgende ingangssignalen:
- Een resolutie van 1280x720 pixels op 50Hz en 60Hz progressive (720p)

Hoewel de oudere consoles in mindere mate ook ondersteuning bieden voor high definition, is het eigenlijk pas de laatste generatie consoles die er echt van gaat profiteren. En dan met name de Xbox 360 van Microsoft en de Playstation 3 van Sony. Ze zijn volledig geoptimaliseerd voor de HD-resoluties en alle games die op deze consoles gaan verschijnen maken daar gebruik van.

Uiteraard vereisen high definition beelden geschikte interfaces en kabels en kun je je console niet zomaar met een simpele composite kabel high definition beelden weer laten geven. Om je console high definition beelden naar een geschikt scherm te laten sturen kun je de volgende drie verschillende kabels gebruiken.
[*][b]Component[/b]
De component kabels bestaan uit 3 kabels om het beeld over te dragen, deze zijn vaak vergezeld door 2 audiokabels. Componentkabels geven analoog beeld door volgens het "Y, Cb/Pb, Cr/Pr" principe, waarbij Y de helderheidscomponent, Cb/Pb de kleurcomponent voor blauw en Cr/Pr het kleurcomponent voor rood zijn. Omdat bij component het signaal van digitaal naar analoog en van RGB naar "Y, Cb/Pb, Cr/Pr" omgezet moet worden en vervolgens weer andersom vindt er enig kwaliteitsverlies plaats.

De aloude bekende VGA interface die talloze resoluties en frequenties ondersteunt is een analoge interface die een RGB signaal biedt. Vrij veel HDTV's en "HD-ready" tv's hebben naast component en HDMI ook een VGA ingang. Hiermee kun je de tv's met een resolutie van 1366x768 ook vaak op hun native resolutie aansturen. Afhankelijk van je tv en de instellingen van de console k�n een VGA-kabel een beter beeld geven dan component kabels. Uiteraard is de VGA kabel ook uitermate geschikt om je console op een computermonitor aan te sluiten om, bij gebrek aan HDTV, toch te kunnen genieten van de hogere resoluties die de console biedt.

Ofwel HDMI, d� nieuwe standaard voor beeld en geluidsoverdracht. In tegenstelling tot component en VGA is HDMI volledig digitaal. Het beeldsignaal van HDMI is gebaseerd op en compatible met DVI. HDMI is in staat om ongecomprimeerd digitaal beeld tot maximaal 1080p te transporteren tussen bron en weergever. Omdat alle HDTV's de beelden toch al digitaal verwerken en de bronnen uiteraard ook digitaal zijn, biedt HDMI verreweg de beste kwaliteit.

De digitale surroundformaten "Dolby Digital" en "DTS" zijn oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld voor bioscoopfilms en later ge�ntroduceerd in de huiskamer met de komst van DVD. "Dolby Digital" biedt hooguit 5.1 discrete geluidskanalen. "DTS" gaat tot maximaal 6.1 en ondersteunt hogere bitrates. De huidige consoles maken al gebruik van multichannel audio en de nieuwe consoles ondersteunen uiteraard ook discrete surroundformaten.

DVD-Video is natuurlijk een van de bekendste en populairste dragers van "Dolby Digital" en "DTS" geluid. BD-video en HD-DVD gaan nog een stapje verder met de nieuwe HD-surround formaten "Dolby Digital Plus", "Dolby True HD" en "DTS-HD". Deze nieuwe formaten bieden een nog hogere geluidskwaliteit dan hun voorgangers en gaan tot 7.1 discrete kanalen. De eerste receivers/versterkers die deze nieuwe formaten ondersteunen moeten echter nog aangekondigd worden. En dan is er nog de "Super Audio CD". Sony en Philips hebben dit samen ge�ntroduceerd als de opvolger van de CD, maar enig succes blijft uit. Hoe dan ook biedt ook SACD multichannel geluid van hoge kwaliteit in het "Direct Stream Digital" formaat.

Om te kunnen genieten van Dolby Digital en/of DTS geluid heb je een AV-receiver of versterker nodig met een geschikte surround-decoder en het juiste aantal speakers uiteraard. Home cinema setjes bieden vaak ook uitkomst en er zijn ook eenvoudige speakersetjes met decoder beschikbaar. Het is maar net wat je er aan wilt uitgeven. Om je console hierop aan te sluiten kun je de volgende kabels gebruiken.
[*][b]S/PDIF Optical[/b]
Ookwel bekend als "Toslink". Een optische digitale kabel die een gecodeerde "Dolby Digital"- of "DTS"-bitstream, maar ook stereo PCM geluid kan transporteren.

[*][b]High Definition Multimedia Interface[/b]
HDMI ondersteunt tot 8 ongecomprimeerde geluidskanalen van 24bit met een samplefrequentie van 192KHz. Maar ook bitstreams voor "Dolby Digital" en "DTS". HD-formaten "Dolby Digital Plus", "Dolby True HD" en "DTS-HD" kunnen enkel over HDMI en niet over S/PDIF. Binnenkort kunnen we receivers verwachten die het beeld over een HDMI kabel kunnen doorlussen naar de tv en zelf de audio bitstream eruit halen en decoderen. Ook voor multichannel SACD's is HDMI de enige mogelijke digitale verbinding.
