Folding@Home

Het doel van Folding@Home is het simuleren van hoe eiwitten folden, misfolden, aggregatie van eiwitten en de hieraan gerelateerde problemen.Het doel is meer te weten komen over eiwitten. Voornamelijk over wat ze doen en hoe ze vouwen(folden). Eiwitten zijn de werkpaarden van het lichaam, maar voordat ze kunnen werken moeten ze zich op een bepaalde manier rangschikken, het zogenaamde ordenen, folden. Dit folden is fundamenteel voor alle biologische wezens, maar als kennis voor de mens eigenlijk bijna een compleet mysterie. Dit folden gebeurt constant in het lichaam, maar het gebeurt wel eens dat dit misgaat, het zogenaamde misfolden. Soms is er niks aan de hand als dat gebeurt maar het kan ook gebeuren dat, dat wel zo is. Een aantal ziektes zijn gerelateerd aan dit misfolden, bijvoorbeeld Alzheimer's, BSE(mad cow) , CJD(Creuzfeld Jacobs Disease), ALS en Parkinson's.

Client

Er zijn clients voor Windows, Linux, MacOSX en met aanpassing ook voor NetBSD en OpenBSD. De systeemeisen:De minimale systeemeisen voor een pc die gemiddeld 10 uur per dag aanstaat is een Intel Pentium 2 500Mhz (of vergelijkbaar) met 64mb ram. Zo'n pc zou net alle deadlines moeten kunnen halen. Aangeraden wordt wel om langzame pc's op de zogenaamde "timeless units" projecten te zetten.

Registratie Om deel te nemen aan folding@home is het niet nodig te registreren. Het eenmalig invullen van je gegevens (bij installatie van de client) is voldoende. Vul je een nieuwe naam in, dan ziet stanford dat en wordt er automatisch een nieuwe user geregistreerd. Hier hoef je verder niets voor te doen.

Om te verifieren of je nieuwe subteam goed is ingevoerd, zul je moeten wachten op de statistieken van de dag nadat je je eerste werk (workunit) teruggestuurd hebt naar de server. In deze statistieken zul je dan je subteam's naam terug kunnen vinden.

Install stappenplan

Hier een 'eenvoudige' handleiding hoe je FaH installeert.

Standard Installation - Graphical Client

1. Download de graphical client van - http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

2. Donwload klaar dubbelklik op de installer

3. Volg de stappen, vergelijkbaar met andere programma's. Bij username gebruik je: [DPC]_FOKschaap0Nickname (later wijzigen bij de configuratie is mogelijk)

4. Wanneer install klaar wordt het configuratie scherm geopend (deze heeft 4 verschillende tabs)

5. Enter je nickname en team nummer, voor Dutch Power Cows is dat 92.

6. Dat was het!! Klik op OK en hij gaat nu aan de slag met het vouwen van de prote�nes.

Als het goed is zou er een rood radertje (rechts-onder) in je taskbar te zien zijn, dit is F@H.
Tweemaal klikken geeft het 'Display' window met de prote�ne waaraan hij werkt en diverse andere info.

Standard Installation - Console Client

1. Download de console client van - http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html
2. Maak een map aan waar je F@H wil neerzetten (Bv C:\Program Files\F@H)
3. Copy het gedownloade bestand naar die directory
4. EVENTUEEL: Dit is erg handig als je later enkele parametes wil veranderen; creeer een shortcut naar F@H.exe in dezelfde directory en hernoem het naar FAH502-Console configonly.
5. EVENTUEEL: na punt 4. Rechter klik op de shortcut, kies properties, er zou moeten staan "...(FAH Directory)\FAH502-console.exe" verander dit naar "(FAH Directory)\FAH502-console.exe" configonly. zorg dat er een spatie staat tussen: console.exe" en de van -configonly, klik apply en ok om te sluiten.
6. Dubbel klik FAH502-Console.exe. Maar als je de configonly shortcut hebt gemaakt gebruik je die. Je krijgt een 'dos-scherm'.
7. Vul gebruikers naam en druk op enter
8. Vervolgens vraagt ie team nummer dit is 92 voor DPC.
9. Nu vraagt ie of je F@H als een service wil runnen (dit betekend dat F@H ook draait als er niemand is ingelogd op je computer. Als je dit wil dan typ je Yes en druk je op enter anders doe je alleen enter.
10. De volgende 3 vragen (vraag voor verzenden/ontvangen van werk units, gebruik Internet Explorer settings, gebruik Proxy) kun je een enter doen. Alleen als je met een proxy werkt moet je daar Yes zeggen, je kunt dan je proxy server, username en password geven.
11. De volgende vraag is of je Working units binnen krijgt groter dan 5MB (deze units kunnen een grotere geheugen nodig hebben)no/yes) [no]? Druk momenteel maar op enter, het kan later nog aangepast worden.
12. Druk enter bij de laatste vraag: Change advanced options
13. Je bent klaar!

Als je besloten had om F@H te draaien als service dan druk je eerst op Ctrl+C om het window te sluiten en dan reboot je PC. Geen server dan hoef je dat niet te doen, maar misschien is het een goed idee om een shortcut naar de F@H client te maken en in je startup directory te plaatsen zodat deze elke keer opstart als je inlogt.

Verdere instelling kunnen aangepast worden in het Folding@Home control panel
systemtray, configure, user, teamnummer -> vul bij teamnummer 92 in voor DPC

Bij advanced kun je instellen hoeveel % van je CPU gebruikt wordt.

Dual en HTT systemen

Folding@Home biedt ondersteuning voor meerdere fysieke of logische cpu's. Dit gaat alleen niet vanzelf. Om hiervan volledig gebruik te maken ben je verplicht tot het runnen van 1 console per fysieke of logische core. Stop de client in een aparte map. Herhaal dit voor elke logische of fysieke cpu die er in jouw systeem zit. Dat komt bijvoorbeeld neer op 2 mappen voor een P4 3.2Ghz en 4 mappen voor een Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz.Nadat de client in alle mappen aanwezig is kan deze worden gestart. Let op! Tijdens de installatie wordt gevraagd om een "MachineID". Dit moet in elke map een ander nummer zijn: 1 t/m 8. Bij een andere pc kan je gewoon weer met een schone lei beginnen.

Installing for big work units

To receive big work units you need to use the advmethods switch and enable receipt of big work units in the client.

Graphical Client

  1. Follow steps 1-5 of Standard Installation  Graphical Client if you havent already. If you have already installed the graphical client follow on from the next step.
  2. Open the F@H configuration, click on the connections tab, you should see this:
  3. Check the line that says Allow receipt of work assignments and return of results greater than 5 MB in size, so that there is a tick next to it. Click ok.
  4. Close the F@H client.
  5. Find the shortcut that opens F@H client for you. If you have performed a default install this will be in your Startup folder (Start->Programs->Startup). Right click the shortcut and open the properties, youll see something like this:
  6. In the target line change C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\WinF@H to C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\WinF@H advmethods
  7. Click apply, then OK
  8. Open the F@H client again, using the shortcut that you just added advmethods to. You are now ready to receive big work units!!!

Console Version

If you have installed the Console version as a service and have installed the optional shortcut:

  1. Follow steps 1-10 of Standard Installation  Console Client.
  2. The next question is Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB in size (such work units may have large memory demands) (no/yes) [no]? Type yes, and press enter.
  3. Just press enter for the final question Change advanced options Close the client by pressing Ctrl+C if you are not using the shortcut.
  4. Now you need to do some editing it the registry. You can use regedit (which I have outlined below) or use pks F@H service tool, which can be d/ld here: http://devel.bluetentacle.co.uk/dc/pkfsct/index.htm. All the instructions are there on how to use it.
  5. Steps 5-7: EDITING THE REGISTRY USING REGEDIT: Open up regedit (Start->Run->Type in regedit, press OK. Navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Service\FAH@C:+F@H+FAH502-Console.exe. It will not be exactly the same if you have installed to a different drive, but will be close (you can see that in the screenshot below as I have my F@H installed on my D drive).
  6. Double click the imagepath key. A box will open up as below:
  7. After Console.exe svcstart add advmethods. Ensure that there is a space between svcstart and advmethods.
  8. Click ok, close regedit, reboot your computer, and youre done!!!

If you have installed the console version as a service, but not installed the optional shortcut:

  1. You need to stop the F@H service. Right click My Computer, click Manage, double click Services and Applications, double click Services, and find the F@H service (titled FAH@C:+F@H+FAH502-Console.exe).
  2. Double click the service, click stop, click apply then click ok on the F@H service properties page.
  3. Go to the directory that you installed F@H into. Open up the client.cfg file only use Notepad, Wordpad as a tendency to alter the formatting of the file resulting in a lost of information.  Locate bigpackets=no, and change it to bigpackets=yes. Save and close the file. If bigpackets already =yes then leave it. If you have yet to install the client but want to install it as outlined above (service without shortcut) then answer yes to Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB in size (such work units may have large memory demands) (no/yes) [no]?
  4. Follow steps 4-8 in the Advanced Options>Console Version> If you have installed the Console version as a service and have installed the optional shortcut: section.

f you have not installed the console version as a service and not installed the optional shortcut

  1. Close the console by pressing Ctrl+C.
  2. Go to the directory that you installed F@H into. Open up the client.cfg file using Notepad or Wordpad. Locate bigpackets=no, and change it to bigpackets=yes. Save and close the file. If bigpackets already =yes then leave it. If you have yet to install the client but want to install it as outlined above (service without shortcut) then answer yes to Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB in size (such work units may have large memory demands) (no/yes) [no]?
  3. Right click the F@H executable that you use to start up F@H, click properties, in the target line you will have \FAH502-Console.exe. Change this to \FAH502-Console.exe advmethods then click apply and OK.
  4. Restart the client.

Monitor progs

Electron Microscope III is een programma voor het monitoren van F@H, maximaal 50 clients. Het geeft details en status van elke client die FAH draait, meer EM3 install help

Press enter for this for the moment. This question relates to receive work units worth a lot of points, I will explain how to configure this in a later section.

-. Youre done!! If you decided to run F@H as a service firstly press Ctrl+C to close the console then reboot your computer. If you arent running it as a service you dont need to do this, you may find it a good idea to create a shortcut to the F@H client and place it in your startup directory so that F@H starts every time you log in.
